Jet
Aviation - Biggin Hill Airport
The
refurbishment of a 1946 Aircraft Hangar at Biggin Hill Airport
proved to be one of the more interesting projects of 2001 due
to it being unusual. The existing hangar framework was, in the
main, in reasonable condition although it had suffered from various
stages of corrosion over it's life.
Our
main involvement as engineers was in the installation of new taller,
sliding doors at each end where we were required to provide the
design and details of the new support framework.
New
offices, links and workshops were to be erected at the side of
the hangar consisting of prefabricated framework. The presence
of very high shrinkage clay and the proximity of trees , enforced
the use of deep strip or pad foundations and ground beams.
