Brixton
Academy -
London
During
1998 we were invited to provide structural services in the refurbishment
of the Brixton Academy, a venue for popular music. Built in 1927
and now a Grade II listed building. The front of house was constructed
with a feature dome over the main entrance, above which a parapet
wall spanned the full width of the elevation.
The
support of the wall was provided by plate girders, which were
considerably corroded. Investigation into the condition of the
existing beams showed that they had lost much of their capacity
from the corrosion. Due to the feature detail of the glazed blocks
it was not desirable to remove the beams. It was therefore decided
to maintain the existing beams and support them from new beams
installed above. Meticulous attention to detail was necessary
to meet the requirements of English Heritage and Borough of Camberwell.
The
design and detailing of the connections of new to old were produced
in-house and reproduced on site with the practical approach adopted.
The
parapet was reinstated with new restraint members providing a
renewed façade matching the existing exactly .
