Alan
joined the practice in March 1998, as an Associate to
assist George Mah Associates to open the Caterham office.
Alan's role was to continue to develop his relationship
with his existing and new clients, some of which extend
well beyond 10 years. After one year Alan became Managing
Director of the Caterham office and in November by mutual
agreement with his co-directors took full control of the
practice following their resignation.
From
our new office in Cowfold and trading as Alan
Hutton Associates, the practice
continues to expand following continued and successful
relationships with former and new clients
His
previous experience included an Associateship with an
established North London Practice for whom he successfully
ran an office in Dorking, Surrey, for a period of 8 years.
This followed with a senior role lasting eleven years
with a prominent Consultant in Hove, where he was an associate
partner for eight years. The last two years of Alan's
experience with the practice were as a Managing Director
of a joint venture practice in Singapore where he set
up and ran an office. During this period he assisted a
local Practice with their increased workload and provided
technical assistance within their office in a parallel
role as Technical Director.
Alan's
engineering expedience includes the technical planning
and scheming of major refurbishment's, the scheming and
technical supervision of the design of multi-story luxury
flats with construction difficulties associated associated
with underground car parking, multi-story offices and
steel framed buildings. With more than 25 years experience
of post qualification experience, Alan has considerable
and varied knowledge in the field of Structural Engineering.
George
is an associate member of the Institution of Structural
Engineers and the Institution of Civil Engineers. He is
also a member of the Association of Planning Supervisors.
He is the founder Partner of the original George Mah Associates
Practice.
His
training in engineering began in the Civil & Structural
Section of the Public Works Department (British Crown
Agents) in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia in 1972. In
1974, he joined Archibald Shaw and Partners, a firm of
international Consulting engineers with Headquarters at
Chichester, UK and branch offices in Malaysia, West Indies,
Saudia Arabia and Reading. His education in engineering
was gained by attending day release studies at Chichester
College of Technology and Brighton Polytechnic between
1974 and 1978. On completing his engineering education
and pass in the Structural Engineering Membership exam,
he gained registration with the British Engineering Council
as an incorporated Engineer. Associate membership of the
institution of Civil Engineers was achieved in 1982. Extended
studies in Geotechnical and foundation Engineering were
attended at the imperial Collage London 1988.
His
practical experience in Civil and Structural Engineering
was gained in the UK and Maylasia, working for Private
Consultant Engineers, designing and detailing projects
ranging from multi-story reinforced concrete, steel and
masonry buildings, to extensions and alterations to domestic
properties.
George
continues as company secretary where his business skills
and experience enhance the smooth running operation. George
still keeps and active interest in engineering and is
able to offer engineering consultancy and assistance when
required.
Bruce
joined the practice in 1999 to give a greater flexibility
in resources to cope with the increased workload. He has
gained a varied range of experience during his training
with Triad Timber Components, as a roof truss and timber
frame design engineer. He progressed to senior design
engineer with the responsibility of co-ordination of whole
roof projects from quotation to completion, including
supervision of site subcontractors.
Further
practical experience was gained in Structural Engineering
whilst working for a well established firm of Consulting
Engineers in Hove, between 1988 and 1992 where he work
in teams under the guidance of both Alan Hutton and George
Mah. The experience gained helped to pass the associate
membership examination of Institution of Structural Engineers
in 1992.
An
enforced career change gave him several years valuable
experience in the financial services sector where he became
a fully qualified adviser. However the challenge of Engineering
hastened a return in 1999.
Previous
structural projects, which he has engineered, include
housing , schools, hotels, sports halls, theaters, supermarkets,
multistory blocks of flats and offices, warehouse's, community
centers and major refurbishment of listed buildings in
London and throughout the South and West.
Bruce
became an associate in April of the year of 2000 in recognition
of his hard work. In June 2002 he was invited to join
the board as Director and shareholder. This new role formalises
Bruce in the role of managing projects and staff within
the office, so freeing Alan to concentrate on the development
of new works and clients.
